On March 11, 1990, the Supreme Council of Lithuania adopted the Act of the Re-Establishment of the State of Lithuania, restoring the sovereign state of Lithuania after fifty years of Soviet occupation.
This historic declaration reaffirmed the Lithuanian people’s enduring commitment to freedom, democracy, and national self-determination. The Act proclaimed that the sovereign powers of the Lithuanian state—abolished by foreign force in 1940—were restored, and that Lithuania once again stood as an independent nation.
On this day we honor the courage and determination of the Lithuanian people who peacefully reclaimed their independence and helped inspire the broader movement for freedom throughout Central and Eastern Europe.
Let this anniversary remind us that the values of liberty, sovereignty, and human dignity remain the foundation of Lithuania’s democratic state and its place among the free nations of the world.
